Description

This barite or baryte is from Cartersville in the Catersville Ditrict, Bartow County, Georgia, USA. This district contains several mines in which 21 different minerals can be found including barite. It is a sulfate that contains the elements Ba, S and O. This is a good sized cluster of crystals for the locale. It consists of thick leaf-like grey-blue crystals that are frosted in one direction with secondary deposits of chalcedoney and included oxides. When viewed from the other direction (photo 3) the crystals have a vitreous luster. It displays well from all sides and measures 4 1/8 x 2 5/8 x 1 1/2 inches or 105 x 67 x 38 mm.
