Description
These azurite crystals are from the Milpillas Mine in Cuitaca, Mun.de Santa Cruz, Sonora, Mexico. Mining at this locale began in 2006 with the extraction of copper minerals. Thirty-six mineral species have been identified at the mine including world class azurites. It is a secondary copper carbonate containing the elements Cu, C and O. Mining started in several copper oxide zones where the carbonate minerals including azurite were found. This specimen consists of a tuff and oxide matrix that hosts dozens of crystals up to 30 mm in size. The crystals are multi-terminated and the surfaces are complex with a bright vitreous luster.There is some minor malachite on the piece also. This piece is a cabinet sized piece that measures 2 3/4 x 2 3/8 x 1 5/8 inches 70 x 60 x 41 mm.
