Azurite – Crystal Cluster from the Milpillas Mine

These azurite crystals are from the Milpillas Mine in Cuitaca, Santa Cruz, Sonora, Mexico. Mining at this locale began in 2006 with the extraction of copper minerals. Thirty-six mineral species have been identified at the mine including world class azurites. It is a secondary copper carbonate containing the elements Cu, C and O. Mining started in several copper oxide zones where the carbonate minerals including azurite were found.This specimen consists of a breccia matrix topped with a climbing cluster of interpenetrating azurite crystals with minor fibrous malachite. They have an exceptional color, luster, and are translucent around the edges under bright light. This piece measures 1 3/4 x 1 3/8 x 1 1/4 inches or 45 x 35 x 32 mm.
