These azurite crystals are from the Milpillas Mine in Cuitaca, Mun.de Santa Cruz, Sonora, Mexico. Mining at this locale began in 2006 with the extraction of copper minerals. Thirty-six mineral species have been identified at the mine including world class azurites. It is a secondary copper carbonate containing the elements Cu, C and O. Mining started in several copper oxide zones where the carbonate minerals including azurite were found.This specimen consists of a breccia matrix topped with a climbing cluster of interpenetrating azurite crystals with minor fibrous malachite. They have an exceptional color, luster, and are translucent around the edges under bright light. This piece measures 1 3/4 x 1 3/8 x 1 1/4 inches or 45 x 35 x 32 mm.
