This astrophyllite is from the Khibiny Massif, Murmansk Oblast, Russia. This is a large area encompassing hundreds of square miles. It is highly mineralized and contains over 500 different minerals including possibly the best astrophyllite known. It is a silicate that contains the elements K, Na,K, Fe, Ti, Si, O, H, F. The name is Greek for star leaf and that is a excellent description for the shiny randomly oriented crystals. This is a double sided piece with an excellent large crystal on one side that is mixed among smaller starbursts of bronze crystals (photos 1 & 2). The reverse side has a solid coverage of bronze starburst crystals (photos 3 & 4). This piece measures 2 1/4 x 1 7/8 x 11/16 inches or 57 x 47 x 17 mm.
