This amethyst is from the Boekenhoutshoek Area, in the Mkobola, Nkangala District, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. This area produces quartz and amethyst which is the purple variety of quartz. I do not know the origin of the marketing names of spirit and cactus quartz other but it was probably to make them sound more exotic. Some specimens are marketed as also being citrine but the orange colors are actually inclusions of oxides in the crystals. This is an outstanding cluster that consists of elongated primary crystals that have been covered with a second generation of amethyst crystals. The amethyst also has some included iron oxides which give the yellow/red highlights to the piece. All the crystals are complete without any dings or bruises. This piece measures 3 1/4 x 1 5/8 x 1 7/8 inches or 84 x 41 x 48 mm.
