This amethyst is from Piedras Parado in the Mun de Tatatlila, Veracruz, Mexico.This locale contains 6 different minerals including the world famous amethyst specimens found there. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz which is a silicate containing the elements Si and O. In pure form quartz is colorless however it can be found in different colors that are caused by trace impurities in the crystal lattice. This is an exceptional piece consisting of a radiating, star-like, cluster of large, elongated, crystals. The crystals are typical for the locale with translucent bases or centers, and transparent, phantom filled, tops. This piece measures 3 x 3 x 2 3/8 inches or 76 x 76 x 60 mm and the longest crystal is 2 3/4 inches.
