This amethyst is from the Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada. This locale encompasses a huge mineral rich area containing dozens of locations were amethyst can be found. It is particularly famous for the reddish amethyst with hematite inclusions. Amethyst is a silicate that contains the elements Si, and O. Pure quartz is colorless but it can be found in different colors depending on the types of trace elements in the crystal lattice. Hematite is an oxide that contains the elements Fe and O. This piece is made up of a group of attached amethyst crystal rosettes with hematite inclusions just below the surface of the crystals. The hematite gives the crystals a reddish hue and some irregular tips that appear to be but are not dinged. It has a sawed base also. This piece measures 1 3/4 x 1 1/8 x 5/8 inches or 45 x 28 x 16 mm.
