This amethyst crystal is from the Anahi Mine in the Gaiba District, Sandoval Province, Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia. This locale is mined for gem quartz that includes amethyst, citrine and ametrine. Quartz is a silicate containing the elements Si and O. In pure form it is colorless however it can come in a variety of colors that are caused by trace elements in the crystal lattice. Amethyst contains iron impurities.This is a large hexagonal crystal with a six sided termination. It has a vitreous luster and the interior is translucent to gemmy with phanthoms and zones of varying shades of purple and light smokey. This crystal measures 3 3/4 x 2 1/2 x 2 inches or 95 x 63 x 50 mm.
