This amethyst is from the Boekenhoutshoek Area, in the Mkobola, Nkangala District, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. This area produces quartz and amethyst which is the purple variety of quartz. Some specimens are marketed as also being citrine but the orange colors are actually inclusions of oxides in the crystals. This is a cluster that consists of elongated, primary, crystals that have been covered with a second generation of amethyst crystals. The amethyst also has some included iron oxides which give the yellow/red highlights to the piece. The crystals and their terminations are free of dings or bruising. It measures 3 1/4 x 1 7/8 x 1 5/8 inches or 83 x 48 x 41 mm.
